North York makes up the majority of the northern half of Toronto and according to the 2006 Census had a population of over 620,000, growing from 608,000 in 2001. In 1998 North York, along with five other municipalities, merged into the amalgamated City of Toronto; North York was at that time the second largest of these municipalities. As far as towns are concerned, North York is young, having formed only recently on June 13th 1922 from the original Township of York. York itself became an incorporated town in 1850, and in the 1920s its southern part took on more of an urban feel, its northern side staying more rural. Thus the decision was made to split the city in two, and North York was born, becoming the Borough of North York in 1967 and later the City of North York on Feb. 14th, 1979. As North York received its city charter on Valentine's day, it adopted the slogan, "The City with Heart". The area grew rapidly after the second World War, and was a regional centre for agriculture by the 1950s. These days, North York is home to a diverse population as well as many interesting cultural sites. Located in North York is the Ontario Science Centre (which contains over 800 scientific exhibits), the Toronto Centre for the Arts and Black Creek Pioneer Village to name a few. North York is also a great place to shop and is home to many shopping centres such as Fairview Mall, Yorkdale Shopping Centre and Sheppard Plaza. The city has incredibly low unemployment counts which makes it an ideal place to live and work in. With such a large population and much of it comprised of eligible singles, it's no wonder North York residents attend speed dating events. They agree that speed dating with Toronto's largest speed dating service serves them well when it comes to finding that special someone to settle down with. The concept is simple and user friendly: participants sign up online and choose an event they'd like to attend in the downtown Toronto or Mississauga area. They meet at a pre-determined lounge or restaurant, and embark on up to 25 three-minute dates in one night! After each date, attendees mark down on their "matchcard" whether or not they'd like to see each person again. tallies up who said "yes" to each other (otherwise known as a match), and then subsequently exchange their contact info for them. It's an easy, no stress way to find your mate and has been successful for many many people.
