It’s easy to spot cheesy romantic settings, but it’s not easy to create a classy one, especially if you can’t afford to shell out the cash for a swanky hotel room.
Luckily for your wallet, staycations are becoming more and more popular with long-term couples looking to decompress and reconnect and new couples ready to solidify their bond. But no matter how long you’ve been together or how much dough you spend on the room, keep it classy with these tips to sweep her off her feet, make her feel special and set the perfect romantic mood.
Set up Mood Lighting
Candles are the most romantic thing in the world right? Black smoke marks on the walls, smoke detector alarms, emergency sprinkler systems and, of course, the constant threat of setting her hair on fire might beg to differ. The solution to crummy hotel room lighting: Christmas lights. They’re cheap, relatively safe and have a flattering glow. And then you don’t even have to discuss if you want the lights on or off. That is the beauty of mood lighting.
Get a few strands of lights and line the perimeter of the room. Wrap them around lamps, the desk and anywhere else you want. Many hotels will even be willing to turn the lights on before you bring her back to the room for a serious wow factor. After all, even cheap champagne looks beautiful lit up by twinkling lights.
Use white lights for a classic look, or opt for lights in her favorite color for a personal touch to show her just how much you pay attention.
Add Romantic Scents
Your sense of smell has a lot to do with determining your mood, just look at the profitability of the scented candle and perfume industries. Make the room smell like a million dollars by spritzing her favorite perfume (or your cologne) on the sheets. Pack some aromatherapy crystals or spa fragrance to use in the hot tub to further set the mood. The heat intensifies the fragrance, so start with a small amount. Wait a few minutes, and if the smell is too faint, add a bit more. Remember, less is always more when it comes to using any type of fragrance.
Make It Feel Like Home (Or Better)
Rip that comforter off the bed, and replace it with an ultra soft blanket of your own. Pick one up at a discount store like Ross or T.J. Maxx for less than $20. This way any snuggle session feels clean and cozy.
If she is especially attached to her pillow at home, surprise her with it in the room in a satin pillowcase. Showing you want her to be comfortable and sleep well is the ultimate aphrodisiac.
Drink Good Wine
Any good sommelier will tell you a good tasting wine is not about the price tag, it’s about the grape, harvest and aging process. There are apps and online tools to help you find a great wine to enjoy without breaking the bank.
Order in and eat on the balcony for a cost-effective and intimate evening. Have the front desk drop off real silverware and wine glasses beforehand or bring your own from home. You don’t want to be eating your nice dinner with plastic forks and drinking good wine out of the bathroom water glasses.
